Have you ever wondered why you are having so many symptoms going through menopause when some of your friends are not? Why is it that you have hot flashes, insomnia, feel depressed, anxious and have gained weight while your best friend has only had a few hot flashes and no other symptoms to speak of?

Whether a woman is in menopause or is perimenopausal, the key to addressing symptoms is through HORMONE BALANCE.

The answer is balance-and not just estrogen! All of our sex hormones estrogen, progesterone, testosterone and our adrenal stress hormones of cortisol, DHEA, and the pituitary hormones of LH and FSH and our thyroid hormones and how our body handles the sugar we eat by secreting insulin and how our liver detoxifies the hormones we both make and ingest in our food all influence how a woman goes through menopause and perimenopause.

In fact, millions of women every year see help for hormonal problems such as hot flashes, night sweats, weight gain, foggy thinking, insomnia, hormonal migraines, fibroids, endometriosis and PMS! All of these symptoms are labeled under the category of "hormone imbalance".  Conventional medicine puts menopausal women on hormone replacement therapy and menstruating women on birth control pills to combat symptoms of hormone imbalance. Women are lead to believe that taking some hormone pill will resolve all their problems. And, in the case of menstruating women, prescribed oral contraceptives do nothing but completely shut down ovarian function so that no hormones are produced by the body. Conventional medical thinking is that if a woman has hot flashes, she must be lacking estrogen. From a Functional Medicine point of view we know that hot flashes can be caused by adrenal gland dysfunction, thyroid gland problems or an imbalance between estrogen and progesterone. Any prescription for estrogen, in this case, whether synthetic or bio-identical, will not fix a woman's hot flash problem!!

Natural Functional Medicine Approach

At Women's BestHealth we assess and place you into one of the 12 different Menopause Profiles, depending on your levels of estrogen, progesterone and testosterone (All Women Are NOT Alike). For instance, if you are estrogen dominant, we will want to support proper progesterone balance while gently detoxifying or removing the excess estrogen from your body. We do this by helping your liver function properly, so that your body is able to get rid of excess hormone. Remember, whether you take hormones or make hormones, you must be able to detoxify them out of the body. Excess estrogen is responsible for symptoms such as irregular bleeding, breast tenderness, fibroids, moodiness, certain food cravings and other PMS symptoms.

Your adrenal glands are also assessed to determine whether you are in adrenal fatigue or adrenal stress. Since our adrenal glands take over sex hormone production as we age, this is an extremely important test.
